If you have ever wondered what a management accountant does all day, FP&A is the modern answer. It is one of the largest finance job pools in India — every global capability centre, MNC and growth startup runs an FP&A team — and it is the destination of the US CMA.
What FP&A does
Plan. Build the annual budget and the rolling forecast: revenue by product, costs by department, headcount, capex.
Analyse. Explain variance — why did we spend more than planned, why did margin slip in one region, what happens if a price rises 5%?
Partner. Sit with the sales, operations or product leaders and help them make decisions with numbers. This is why FP&A people are called business partners.
Report. Monthly management packs, board decks, KPI dashboards. Increasingly in Power BI or Tableau rather than slides.
A week in FP&A
- Monday: close the month — pull actuals, reconcile to the ledger, start the variance commentary.
- Tuesday–Wednesday: update the forecast; model two scenarios the CFO asked for.
- Thursday: business-partner reviews with department heads.
- Friday: build the deck for the leadership meeting; fix the dashboard.
Roles and progression
FP&A analyst → Senior analyst → FP&A manager → Finance controller or Head of FP&A → CFO.
Adjacent roles with the same skill set: management accountant, cost accountant, business finance partner, finance analytics.
See indicative salary bands, top employers and the growth path on the Career Map under pillar A2 — Deploying capital.
The credential: US CMA
The US CMA syllabus is the FP&A job description:
- Part 1: planning, budgeting and forecasting; performance management; cost management; internal controls; technology and analytics; external financial reporting decisions.
- Part 2: financial statement analysis; corporate finance; decision analysis; risk management; investment decisions; ethics.
Two exams, 6–12 months, windows in Jan–Feb, May–Jun and Sep–Oct. You can sit while still at university; the certificate follows once you have a degree and two years of relevant experience.
Before the CMA: school students and early undergraduates can start with the FMAA, which has no eligibility requirement. After it: the CSCA for strategy roles, and AI in Finance for the analytics edge.
Who gets hired
GCCs of US and European companies (Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram), consulting and outsourcing firms, consumer and pharma MNCs, and increasingly late-stage startups. Entry is typically through campus hiring or an analyst role in a shared-services centre.
Is FP&A for you?
You will like FP&A if you enjoy explaining why a number moved, you are comfortable being the person in the room who says "the model says no", and you like spreadsheets more than you admit. If that sounds like you, the Planning & Performance track is probably your Scorecard result.
