These three come up in almost every conversation about accounting careers in India, usually as if they were interchangeable. They are not. Each is built for a different kind of work.
What each one is for
- US CMA — Certified Management Accountant. The credential for running a business from the inside: planning, budgeting, costing, performance, controls, decision analysis. The work is FP&A, business finance and controllership.
- ACCA — Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. The global reporting and audit credential: IFRS, financial reporting, audit and assurance, with optional tax and performance papers. The work is reporting, audit and controllership across 180 countries.
- CA — Chartered Accountant (India). The Indian statutory profession: audit, tax and reporting under Indian law, with a built-in two-year articleship. The work is Indian audit, tax and practice.

How to choose
Choose US CMA if the sentence "turning numbers into decisions" excites you more than "getting the numbers right". It is also the fastest of the three and the only one you can complete entirely during your degree years (the experience comes later).
Choose ACCA if you want reporting and audit with international mobility, or you are already in a GCC that reports under IFRS or US GAAP. Claim your exemptions — a B.Com earns four to five, CA Inter up to six.
Choose CA if you are committed to Indian statutory practice and can commit four years including articleship. It carries the most weight in Indian audit firms and tax practice.
Can you combine them?
Yes, and many people do, in sequence:
- CA → ACCA: a qualified CA earns up to nine ACCA exemptions.
- US CMA → CSCA: the strategy add-on, awarded only to CMA holders.
- ACCA → US CPA: if your career moves into US GAAP reporting.
Combining them at the same time is rarely worth it. Finish one, work, then add the next if the job demands it.
The one-line answer
- Business decisions → US CMA
- Global reporting and audit → ACCA
- Indian statutory audit and tax → CA
If you genuinely cannot tell which sentence is yours, that is the question the NFCA assessment was built to answer.
